Mike McKeown grew up in Port Elizabeth and has been fishing all his life. He moved to Johannesburg in the late eighties and was introduced to fly-fishing by Tony Kietzman in the early nineties, with an introduction to fly-tying soon thereafter. Small stream trout fishing with light tackle has always held a great appeal to Mike and under the guidance of Tony, he soon acquired the skills and techniques required, fishing the streams of Mpumalanga, the north-eastern Free State, the KwaZulu- Natal Drakensberg and the north-eastern Cape.
However, living in the concrete jungle and requiring his weekly fly-fishing fix, Mike began dragging himself to the Vaal River to fish for South Africa’s indigenous yellowfish. He soon switched from fishing conventional “yellowfish methods”, and began fishing the “truck and trailer methods”, which was proving itself very effective in New Zealand (also known as New Zealand Rig). By the mid nineties he had honed his skill at targeting yellowfish and has caught all but two of the nine South African species.
However, he still believes that where he belongs in the fly-fishing world is where there is no cell phone reception and where a 4-wheel drive vehicle is required to get you to your destination. He regularly visits the north-eastern Cape and assists with guiding at festivals and other events in the area.
