After being given a fishing rod as a birthday present at age 5, Paul’s passion for fishing was born. Age eleven saw Paul with his first fly-rod and the bass in Emmarentia Dam were the guinea pigs. A fly-rod was the weapon of choice from that day forward and fly-tying became a worthwhile complement to an evolving passion in that started in1978. Paul took a couple of years off while completing his National Service in the army, and at the end of 1991 found himself confined to a wheelchair due to a car accident.
It dawned on Paul how ideally suited fly-fishing was to a disabled person. No matter whether it’s the Vaal- or the Zambezi Rivers, a tight section of the Spekboom River, or a large stillwater in the Drakensberg, a pontoon boat or quad bike is all Paul needs to satisfy his enduring passion of wetting a fly and hopefully outwitting a wily fish.
Saltwater fly-fishing off a boat is also an option.Paul has made his passion his work and taken on the demanding occupation of a professional custom fly-tyer. From small dries to bulky saltwater offerings, anything goes. Paul is one of the country’s finest fly-tyers and runs all Frontier Fly Fishing’s one-on-one fly-tying lessons.
