Nestled in the heart of the Swartberg region of KwaZulu-Natal are some of the, if not the, best stillwater venues in South Africa. They have been the favourites of the team at Frontier Fly Fishing for as long as we can remember, and over the years we’ve had some of the best angling of our stillwater fishing careers on them.

The fishing here is like nothing you will have experienced in a South Africanstillwater before. The lakes on this region offer the flyfisherman everything he could wish for: anything from huge trout on dragonfly patterns to some of the most technical fly-fishing available in South Africa, using small nymphs and dry flies. In fact if we had to choose a venue which offers the best sight-fishing to trout with small nymphs and dry flies.

Our trips are booked over a new moon, or first- and last quarter moon periods, ensuring that anglers will not be plagued by full moon periods when trout are not as active as over other moon phases. October is a prime period for stillwater fishing in this area – waters are still cool after winter, there is no thunderstorm activity to chase anglers off the water, and no heavy rainfall to discolour the waters, which remain crystal clear for most of the year. Weed growth has also tapered back after winter, opening up many channels and holes that would not otherwise be accessible to anglers at other times of the year.
