Highland Run has been the home of the Frontier Fly Fishing stream academy for many years and we believe that this venue offers the best training ground for people wanting to learn how to fish stream for trout in South Africa.
Situated on the Spekboom River, just north of Lydenburg, this venue is a comfortable 3 ½ hours drive from Johannesburg, allowing our guests to arrive refreshed and ready to fish. The accommodation comprises two large lodges, situated a short cast from the river, which are comfortably apointed; there is even DSTV to ensure that those important rugby games are never missed.
The stream is maintained by South Africa’s premier stream rehabilitator and manager, Doug Starling, ensuring that the waters are always in top shape for guiding, tuition and of course fishing. Doug seldom stocks his waters, but prefers the fish to remain as wild as possible and when stocking is done, he uses conditioned fish from his own hatchery.
The river consists of four distinct beats, ensuring anglers experience a variety of fishing situations. There are both brown and rainbow trout in the stream and different tactics and skills are learnt in the pursuit of each species. Access to the stream is relatively easy with well maintained paths and bridges.
